WMS Update 1-6-15

Dear WMS,

All indications point to a successful first day at Wyoming Middle School!  Our students and staff did a great job learning about our new home.

Drop-off went well considering the snow and cold.  Please follow this link to review drop off procedures: http://www.wyomingcityschools.org/_wyomingcityschools/assets/File/Middle_School/Final%20Drop%20Off%20Procedures%2012-18-14(1).pdf  It will take some time to smooth out some wrinkles but I think we are on the right track.

We did have some students who arrived about 30 minutes before school.  Please remember, we do not have the “Early Bird” service at WMS like we had at the high school.  On a typical day, students will be asked to wait outside until 8:05.  Due to the weather, students were able to be in the cafeteria before 8:05.

During the school day, all students were given a tour of the building, explained expectations and were able to ask questions.  Our lunch procedures worked well but we will continue to monitor it.  We are limited for recess until the gym is operational next week.

Our biggest glitch was lockers.  There were some unforeseen problems but we worked hard to fix them and will continue to problem solve until every issue is resolved.  I ask for patience as we work through this important issue.

During afternoon homeroom, all students should have been given a commemorative pin to mark the opening of our new building.  I thanked students and asked them to wear the pins with pride.  It is a small thank you for their flexibility and patience through the construction process.

I thought pickup was successful as well.  Please work with your students to develop a plan to meet you if you pick them up from school.  We are working with the bus drivers so the buses are first in line.  Today and the foreseeable future, we are going to allow bus riders to leave about three minutes early to ensure buses are the first vehicles out of the parking lot.  I have been made aware that a few students missed their bus.  We will do everything possible to make sure this does not happen in the future.

We are working with contractors to complete projects especially painting and flooring.  Most of the work is happening at night.  There are some contractors here during the school day.  We are requiring them to wear a visitor sticker and check in at the office.

Lastly, I would like to thank our staff and students.  They did a tremendous job today staying calm, flexible and showing teamwork and collaboration.  I would especially like to thank our parent volunteers who helped not only with directing students but with lockers, lunch and shelving books in the Learning Commons.  The collaboration and problem solving I witnessed today is the foundation of Wyoming Middle School.

Thank you so much for your support!

It is a great day to be a Cowboy!!!

Mike
