Update from Mr. Overbey

Dear Wyoming Families,

I want to express my deepest sympathy for the students, staff, parents and community of Sandy Hook Elementary School.  As we struggle to understand this senseless tragedy, I want to inform you of how the staff at WMS is working with your students.  We held a staff meeting at 7:55 to check with teachers and staff to make sure they were okay and to inform them of our procedure for the morning.  During announcements, I emphasized to the students that they are safe at WMS and our #1 priority is their safety.  I also let them know that it is okay to be sad and that we care for them very much.

At the end of announcements, we held a moment of silence for the Sandy Hook community.  Mr. Heybruch and I have spoken with many of our teachers throughout the day and have been visible as much as possible for students.  There was some student/teacher dialogue early in the day but many teachers report that our students are focused on school and not on the tragedy.

As a school we conduct safety drills on a regular basis.  During these drills, staff members review our safety plan with students.  We recently (11/28/12) conducted a lockdown drill to practice; be assured our students’ safety is of the utmost importance to us.  In light of the recent events, we will be reviewing our procedures and continue to be proactive.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us at Wyoming Middle School.

Mike Overbey
